Onyx
What is Onyx?
When limestone is underground under high heat and pressure for a long time, it is transformed into an onyx.
Nothing like a glistening onyx stone can make your interior decorations unique. This stone is resistant to heat, cold and rain. This semi-translucent stone can be backlit creating a wonderfully dramatic glow you cannot achieve in any other way. Its contrasting veining makes each slab a unique work of art.
What is Onyx tile used for?
PARTO’s onyx tiles are softer than many other stones and are not really suited to be used as outdoor tiles. PARTO’s Onyx tile is almost always used for indoor applications.
While they may not be as durable as granite, PARTO’s onyx tiles make an excellent option for floors in areas that receive light traffic. Onyx floor tile is typically used in bathrooms, kitchens, and even bedrooms. Onyx mosaic tile is actually ideal for places like the bathroom and shower floor because of its many grout lines which can provide grip to help prevent slips and falls. Other uses further include wall cladding, light duty home floors, sinks base, and tables.
How durable is Onyx tile?
PARTO’s onyx tile have a smooth, somewhat porous surface. They are also similar to marble in that they have a fairly low density. This makes it softer and more pliable than other natural stone tile, particularly granite.
The soft and porous nature of onyx makes it susceptible to staining, etching and scratching, even if it is properly sealed. It is especially vulnerable to liquids, which can soak through the surface and cause permanent staining and etching. Its tendency to scratch makes it a less-than-ideal choice for floors.
